Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the US, 15–20% is the standard for sit-down restaurants: 15% for adequate service, 18% for good service, and 20% or more for excellent service. The preset buttons above cover the common choices — tap one or enter any custom percentage.
How do I calculate a 20% tip in my head?
Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it. On a $48.50 bill, 10% is $4.85, so 20% is about $9.70. For 15%, take the 10% figure and add half again. The calculator above does the exact math, including tax and bill splitting.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Traditional etiquette says tip on the pre-tax subtotal, since tax is not part of the service. In practice, many people tip on the final total because it is the number printed on the bill — the difference is usually under a dollar. Use the pre-tax/post-tax toggle above to match whichever you prefer.
How do I split a bill with tip between friends?
Enter the bill, pick a tip percentage, and set the number of people. The calculator shows each person's share of the total, tip included. Turn on 'round up' to make each share a clean dollar amount — the extra cents go to the tip.
How much should I tip for food delivery?
Tip 15–20% of the order total, with a minimum of $3–$6 even on small orders. Add more for long distances, bad weather, stairs, or very large orders. Delivery fees go to the restaurant or app, not the driver — the tip is what reaches them.
Do I need to tip on takeout or counter service?
Tipping on takeout is optional but appreciated — 10% is a kind gesture for careful packing and quick service. At fast-food or counter spots with no table service, no tip is expected. Tip jars and checkout screens are requests, not obligations.
How does the 'round up to nearest dollar' option work?
When enabled, the final total is rounded up to the next whole dollar and the extra cents are added to the tip. For example, a $47.30 total becomes $48.00, with $0.70 more going to your server. It is an easy way to be generous and get a clean number.
What should I tip if the service was bad?
Even for poor service, 10% is the usual minimum in the US — skipping the tip entirely is reserved for truly unacceptable situations, and then it is better to speak with a manager. If something went wrong that was the kitchen's fault rather than your server's, do not punish the tip.
Does this tip calculator save my data?
Your inputs are saved in your own browser using localStorage, so the form remembers them on your next visit to this device. Nothing is sent to a server — there is no account and nothing to sign up for.
Is this tip calculator free?
Yes. It is completely free with no account, no signup, and no paywall — part of The Magic Codex's collection of free student tools.
