How to use the metronome
- Set your tempo. Drag the slider, type a BPM between 30 and 240, tap “Tap tempo” in rhythm with the music in your head, or pick a preset like Andante 80.
- Choose a time signature. 4/4 for most pop and rock, 3/4 for waltzes, 2/4 for marches, 6/8 for compound feels. Beat 1 is always accented so you can hear each new measure.
- Press Start (or hit Spacebar). The high-pitched click marks beat 1; the dots and pulse ring flash along so you can watch or listen.
- Adjust mid-practice. Changing the tempo or signature while playing takes effect on the very next beat — no need to stop.
- Practice tip: start 10–20 BPM slower than the target tempo, play the passage cleanly three times, then nudge the tempo up. Slow practice with a steady beat builds fast playing.
Frequently asked questions
How do I set the tempo?
Drag the slider, type a number between 30 and 240 into the tempo box, or tap the Tap tempo button in rhythm — the tool averages your taps and sets the BPM for you.
Why does the first beat sound different?
Beat one is accented — it plays a higher-pitched click so you can feel where each measure starts. That is how real musicians count: one-two-three-four, with the emphasis on one.
What do the time signatures mean?
The top number of the time signature is how many beats are in each measure. 2/4 has two beats, 3/4 has three, 4/4 has four, and 6/8 has six. The beat dots above the controls light up in order so you can follow along.
Is the timing really accurate?
Yes. The clicks are scheduled on the Web Audio clock, which is precise to a fraction of a millisecond, and a lookahead scheduler keeps them steady even if the browser tab gets busy. A plain timer alone would wobble; this design does not.
What is tap tempo?
Tap tempo lets you set the speed by tapping along with the music you have in your head. Tap the button in a steady rhythm and the metronome measures the gaps between your taps, averages the last several, and converts that to BPM.
Does the metronome work when the tab is in the background?
The audio keeps playing because clicks are scheduled ahead on the audio clock, but most browsers throttle background timers, so the flashing beat indicator may pause or skip. The sound itself stays in time.
Why do I need to press Start before I hear anything?
Browsers block audio until you interact with the page, so the metronome waits for your first click on Start before creating any sound. This is a browser privacy rule, not a limitation of the tool.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. The metronome runs entirely in your browser with the Web Audio API. Nothing you set or tap is sent to a server, stored, or logged.
